Waipoua Forest

The Waipoua Forest Sanctuary abounds with rare New Zealand flora and fauna, mighty Kauri, nocturnal kiwi, feather-like ferns, amongst a sub-tropical rainforest. The Twin Coast Discovery highway passes through Waipoua Forest – stop at the Visitor Centre, walk into see Tane Mahuta – the 2,000 year old Lord of the Forest. There are many other native bush walkways to the giant Kauri of Waipoua Forest for people of all ages and abilities. Waipoua Forest is only 30km from Kauri Coast Top 10 Holiday Park.

The world famous Kauri Museum (Link to http://www.kauri-museum.com) is a great way to begin your journey into the Kauri Coast. You will be introduced to real New Zealand heritage at its best... The Kauri Museum is the perfect insight into Northland’s pioneer past. And a way to discover more about the ancient Kauri trees that give the Kauri Coast its name.

Dargaville and Baylys Beach

Check out the relics and treasures of the shipwrecks at the Dargaville Museum (link to www.dargavillemuseum.co.nz/). Find your own historic shipwreck on Ripiro Beach, the longest drivable beach in NZ. Take a tour with a local guide - it might improve your chances. What about kite fishing, surf casting, horse riding, quad biking and star gazing at Baylys Beach (there is an amazing observatory there).

Kai Iwi Lakes

It is worth the detour off the main road to Kai Iwi Lakes where you will find the Taharoa domain - a 538ha recreation reserve containing three freshwater lakes. It is situated 35km northwest of Dargaville. An extensive walking track system has been developed within the reserve and there are sheltered camping and picnic facilities for visitors to the area. The Taharoa Domain is 2.5km from the Tasman Sea. Walkway access to the coast is available though the nearby farm.

Hokianga Harbour

The entrance to the Hokianga Harbour is said to be guarded by two Taniwha. The North Head is a high sand dune, fun to walk over or to slide down. There are numerous walking tracks and historic villages to explore. Enjoy lunch in cafés looking out over the water at Rawene, catch the ferry across to the fishing village of Kohukohu.
