Discover the secrets of the Great Kauri Forests on our 2 hour Guided Night Walk through Trounson Kauri Park. Marvel at the magnificent Kauri Trees and explore the sights and sounds of the forest at night.
We work with the Department of Conservation and have special concession to lead these guided walks. Departing in the evenings from the Kauri Coast TOP 10 Holiday Park we offer a complimentary mini bus for those who don't wish to take their own vehicle to Trounson Park, which is a short 5 minute drive away.
We operate subject to numbers and weather. Walks may be cancelled due to heavy rain or very strong winds for safety and comfort reasons. Bookings are essential as numbers are limited - minimum group size is 4 and maximum is 11. Special private tours for large groups can be arranged. To make a reservation please send an email request - firstname.lastname@example.org or call us on 0800807200. If you are staying here at the Park you can secure your places against your room/site booking and pay on arrival, but if you are not staying here you will need to pay in full at the time of booking (non refundable) so we can only take your booking if there are already people booked or if your party is at least 4 people. The walk departs at or around dusk - so the time varies according to the season. We will confirm the time of departure when we take your booking, but as a guide departure times in mid winter are about 6.30pm and mid summer 8.45pm.
is suitable for most people. It is about 1.7km mainly on a boardwalk, although there is a little grass and gravel. Trainers, walking boots or strong shoes are required, and appropriate clothing for the weather condtions. Torches are provided and you are requested not to use your own lights as we try to minimise the amount of light used for environmental reasons. Minimum age for children is 7 years old, as this is usually the age at which children can stay quiet and cope with the length of the walk late in the evening. This may be waived for private groups or in specific circumstances. However children under 7 years old will need to have independent transport to the start of the Walk, as we don't have child restraints in our complementary mini bus.
From your knowledgable guide you will learn about the Kauri Tree and the native wildlife species, which include Morepork, Brown Kiwi, Kauri Snails, Glow Worms, Long Finned Eels, Weta, Koura and Banded Kokopu.
We know that many people join the tour to see Kiwi, and although we do our best to find one each time, we do not always succeed. Kiwi are seen on about 50% of our tours over a one year period, but there are some times of year when they are easier to spot than others due to breeding patterns. Whether Kiwi are seen or not, this is an interesting and memorable experience not to be missed.
